Zora’s Origin Story

2 min read

Zora didn’t start as a company. It started as a feeling.

A feeling of being in the UK, yet not fully in it. Of scrolling through platforms that never quite spoke our language. Of searching for housing, jobs, advice, friendship — and finding fragments, but never a whole.

Zora was born from that gap.

The Early Days #

In late 2023, two friends — Brendan and Dami — started collecting screenshots. WhatsApp group messages. Facebook posts from housing scams. Forum threads from newly arrived students. Stories of loneliness, culture shock, unfair treatment, and missed connections.

Everywhere, the same themes kept emerging:

“I wish there was one place for all this.”
“I don’t know who to trust.”
“I just want to meet people like me.”

We listened. Then we got to work.

Building from the Margins #

We didn’t have VC money, a flashy launch, or a London office. We had £5,000, a tech backend, and ten brilliant team members in Nigeria who believed in the vision.

We called it Zora — a name that felt soft, strong, and full of possibility.

We didn’t want to copy existing social media. We wanted to build the kind of space we wished we’d had on arrival:

  • A timeline where people like us were visible

  • A classifieds board where you wouldn’t be ignored

  • A place where birthday shoutouts and job tips lived side by side

  • A culture that valued joy, humour, and truth-telling

  • A platform that assumed your story was worth hearing

Community Over Virality #

Zora isn’t here to go viral. It’s here to grow slowly and honestly.
Every group you see, every feature we launch, is shaped by the lived experiences of immigrants and underrepresented communities in the UK.

We don’t believe in extractive growth. We believe in local connections, transparent intentions, and shared ownership of the space.

Where We’re Going #

Zora launched in beta in 2025. Our next chapter?

  • A mobile app built with the same principles

  • Local partnerships that unlock real-world resources

  • Courses, events, and knowledge hubs designed by our communities

  • A business model that stays accountable to the people it serves

Because Zora was never about scale.
It’s about belonging — and building that, together.

How are you feeling?
Still stuck? How can we help?

How can we help?
