Our approach to moderation

1 min read

At Zora Social, moderation is not just about enforcing rules β€” it is about nurturing a respectful, welcoming community where everyone can thrive. Our moderation approach is based on fairness, transparency, and a shared responsibility between users and platform stewards.

This article explains how moderation works on Zora, who is involved, and what you can expect when issues arise.

Why we moderate #

Moderation helps protect:

  • Community safety

  • Freedom of expression within respectful boundaries

  • Trust in the platform and its users

  • Fairness and dignity for marginalised voices

Zora is designed for meaningful connection, not chaos. Moderation ensures that our values stay intact as our community grows.

Who does the moderating? #

Moderation is carried out by:

  • Community ModeratorsΒ β€” trusted members who volunteer or are selected to help review reports, mediate issues, and model good behaviour

  • Zora Team MembersΒ β€” staff responsible for enforcing policies, especially in sensitive or high-impact cases

  • Automated SystemsΒ β€” tools that flag clear violations like spam, hate speech, or harmful links

Users also play a vital role byΒ reporting harmful contentΒ and setting respectful standards in their interactions.

What we moderate #

We take action on content or behaviour that violates our policies, including:

  • Harassment or threats

  • Misinformation that could cause harm

  • Discrimination or hate speech

  • Spam or manipulative tactics

  • Inappropriate or explicit content

  • Impersonation or identity abuse

We also monitor patterns such as repeated offences, coordinated abuse, or off-platform activity that puts community members at risk.

How we make decisions #

Moderation decisions are based on:

  • Our Community GuidelinesΒ and Terms of Use

  • ContextΒ β€” including language, cultural nuance, and the relationship between users

  • SeverityΒ andΒ impactΒ of the reported content

  • User historyΒ β€” repeat behaviour is treated more seriously

Where appropriate, we seek toΒ educate rather than punish, especially for first-time or minor issues.

What happens when content is flagged #

When a post, message, or profile is reported:

  1. A reviewΒ is triggered (automated or manual)

  2. The content may be temporarily hiddenΒ while under review

  3. A decisionΒ is made β€” this may result in a warning, removal, or further action

  4. The reporting user may receive updates, depending on the case

In serious or repeated violations, the user may face temporary suspension or a permanent ban.

Transparency and appeals #

If you believe moderation was unfair:

  • You canΒ appeal moderation decisionsΒ through our help form

  • We review appeals with fresh eyes and communicate outcomes when possible

  • In some cases, educational reminders are provided instead of punishments

We do our best to beΒ transparent without compromising safety.

Building together #

Moderation is not only reactive β€” it is proactive. We are constantly refining our tools, listening to user feedback, and evolving our approach to fit the community’s needs.

You are part of this. By engaging thoughtfully, reporting when needed, and supporting others, you help shape the kind of space we all want to return to.

At Zora, moderation is care. And care makes communities strong.
