Respecting diverse voices and experiences

1 min read

Zora Social is a community shaped by the stories, cultures, and identities of people from all walks of life. We believe diversity is not just welcome β€” it is essential. Respecting different voices is the foundation of a healthy, vibrant space for connection.

This article outlines how you can actively support that principle.

Listen without judgement #

Not everyone will speak, write, or express themselves in the same way as you. When you come across a post or comment that feels unfamiliar:

  • Take a moment to understand before responding

  • Avoid jumping to conclusions or correcting others unnecessarily

  • Allow people to speak from their own experience without demanding proof

Honour different cultural expressions #

Zora is home to people from many backgrounds. You might see posts in different languages, references to customs you do not know, or humour that feels unfamiliar. This is part of what makes our community rich.

Please:

  • Avoid mocking or dismissing cultural expressions

  • Refrain from imitating accents, dialects, or terms in ways that stereotype

  • Embrace the learning opportunity β€” ask respectful questions if unsure

Use inclusive language #

How we speak to and about others matters. You can help make Zora a more welcoming place by:

  • Avoiding assumptions about someone’s identity or background

  • Using people’s correct names and pronouns

  • Steering clear of offensive or outdated terms

  • Speaking kindly, even when you disagree

If someone asks you to rephrase or reconsider your language, take it as an opportunity to grow.

Recognise your impact #

Intent does not always match impact. You may not mean harm, but your words or actions might still hurt. If someone shares that your post made them feel excluded, unsafe, or targeted:

  • Pause and listen

  • Apologise if needed

  • Avoid defensiveness β€” growth is part of community care

Call in, not just call out #

If you witness someone saying something harmful or exclusionary:

  • Consider messaging them privately first, if you feel safe

  • Gently explain why the content may be harmful

  • Use community moderation tools when needed (reporting, blocking)

Our aim is not to shame, but to invite one another into deeper awareness.

Celebrate what makes us different #

Zora is not about fitting in β€” it is about showing up as you are. Share your traditions, stories, music, meals, laughs, and lessons. And honour those doing the same.

When we celebrate each other, we create a platform where no one feels like a guest β€” because everyone belongs.

Respect is not just a guideline β€” it is a daily choice. Thank you for choosing it here.

How are you feeling?
Still stuck? How can we help?

How can we help?
