Understanding the Role of Moderators on Zora Social #
Moderators play a key role in maintaining the health, trust, and day-to-day flow of Zora Social. They are appointed users who help manage spaces, enforce community guidelines, and support a safe and inclusive environment for all.
This article outlines who Moderators are, what responsibilities they hold, and how their role fits within the wider Zora ecosystem.
What is a Moderator? #
A Moderator is a trusted community member who has been given additional permissions to help guide and support activity within a specific space — such as a group, community, event, or the broader platform. Moderators act as facilitators, not enforcers, and their presence helps ensure that conversations remain respectful, productive, and in line with Zora’s values.
They are not staff members, but they do receive platform support and tools to assist in their work.
Where Do Moderators Operate? #
Moderators can be assigned to:
-
Groups – where they help manage membership, discussions, and conduct
-
Communities – where they support Hosts in managing content and engagement
-
Events or Courses – where they help coordinate participation and resolve issues
-
Platform-wide support – for selected users with a broader community-facing role
Each Moderator’s permissions are limited to the area they are responsible for.
What Can Moderators Do? #
While permissions may vary slightly depending on context, most Moderators are able to:
-
Approve or remove group or community posts that violate guidelines
-
Remove inappropriate comments or flag suspicious behaviour
-
Guide discussions and resolve minor disputes between users
-
Approve or reject join requests for closed spaces
-
Support Hosts or Verified Members in keeping their spaces active and welcoming
-
Raise concerns to Zora’s internal team when needed
Moderators do not have access to private messages or personal user data.
How Are Moderators Chosen? #
Moderators are selected in a few ways:
-
Appointed by Hosts – in the case of Communities or Events
-
Nominated by users – for groups and growing spaces
-
Invited by Zora – when a user has shown consistent leadership and good judgement
In all cases, Zora looks for users who have:
-
A strong history of respectful, community-focused engagement
-
Familiarity with Zora’s guidelines and features
-
The ability to handle disagreement with fairness and empathy
-
Availability to check in regularly on the spaces they moderate
What Support Do Moderators Receive? #
Zora offers Moderators:
-
Access to a Moderation Toolkit with tips and technical guidance
-
A dedicated Moderator Channel to connect with other mods
-
The ability to contact Zora’s support team directly for escalation
-
Optional monthly check-ins to share challenges and successes
Moderators are also recognised through a badge on their profile and posts, and may be prioritised for new features and support tools.
Can Someone Lose Moderator Status? #
Yes. Moderators are expected to act in good faith and in alignment with Zora’s principles. A Moderator may be removed if they:
-
Breach trust or behave in ways that conflict with the role
-
Abuse moderation tools or overstep boundaries
-
Become inactive or unresponsive in their assigned spaces
-
Fail to uphold platform safety and fairness
All moderation activity is reviewed periodically to ensure accountability.
